Bear or wildlife problem
Bears and other wildlife are a state matter, not a county department — start with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Wildlife Helpline for anything short of an emergency.
Bear getting into trash, bird feeders, or pet food: secure the food source first — that’s usually what ends the visits. NC Wildlife’s BearWise program has the details.
Aggressive, injured, or clearly dangerous wildlife: NC Wildlife’s own guidance is to stay away and notify your local animal control — call Haywood County Animal Services below, or the Sheriff’s non-emergency line after hours.
Possible rabies exposure (a bite or scratch): wash the area with soap and water right away and call your doctor or the Health Department.
The Wildlife Helpline doesn’t trap or remove animals itself — it connects you to a licensed control agent, for a fee.
What to expect: routine sightings and property damage rarely get a same-day response; a genuine danger does.
