Stray dog or cat

A healthy stray that’s not in danger should not be picked up, per Haywood County Animal Services — most strays are found within a mile of home and often find their own way back.

To report a stray or start intake: call Animal Services (below), or email asintake@haywoodcountync.gov. Animal Services uses managed intake — an appointment is required, and they only take animals found inside Haywood County.

Injured, aggressive, or clearly in danger: call Animal Services directly; after hours, animal-related emergencies route through the Sheriff’s dispatch line below.

While you wait: post to the county’s Lost & Found Facebook group, and have any found animal scanned for a microchip at a vet or at Animal Services — that reunites owners faster than the shelter process.

What to expect: if you do bring an animal in, be ready to foster it temporarily if the shelter has no space that day.
